Winnifred Fallers Sullivan, Senior Fellow, Martin Marty Center at the University of Chicago Divinity School, delivers the 57th John Randolph Tucker Lecture on Friday, September 23 at 12:10 p.m. in the Moot Courtroom, Lewis Hall. The title of Sullivan’s lecture is “Comparing Religions, Legally.”
Sullivan teaches and writes in the area of the comparative study of the intersection of law and religion. Trained in both law and religious studies, she is particularly interested in the legal regulation of religion in modern pluralistic societies. Among other issues, her books and articles address the phenomenology of religion in the American legal context. She is the author of Paying the Words Extra: Religious Discourse in the Supreme Court of the United States and The Impossibility of Religious Freedom. Sullivan is also the wife of Barry Sullivan, who served as Dean of the Law School from 1994 to 1999.
