Virginia Supreme Court Records
The Virginia Supreme Court Records Collection contains PDF scans of official documents filed with the Supreme Court of Virginia that present the facts and findings of the trial court prior to appeal. These records are generally in the form of appendices to appellate briefs (not part of this collection) that were filed with the Court. Over 9,300 cases are represented, covering years 1923 to 2005.
The records included in this collection were acquired by the W&L Law Library from members of the Virginia judiciary and from the Supreme Court. Although they are public records, most are not readily available through free or subscription resources elsewhere online.
The records are grouped by decade and Virginia Reports volume number and are browsable from the links below. You may also search by keyword (party name, legal topic, judge, etc.) using the “Search – in this collection” field in the column at left on this page.
Although this collection of case records is extensive, it is not comprehensive. For help locating records not included here, you may contact the Supreme Court of Virginia.
Please note: All materials in this collection are public documents, however some are not available for online viewing or download. These include documents that contain sensitive personally identifiable information (e.g., Social Security numbers) or are related to cases involving sexual assault in which the victim may be identified by name. Although such case records are fully indexed within the collection and their pages publicly visible, the ability to download the materials had been disabled on these pages. If you do not see an option to “Download” on a case record page, email the W&L Law Library at LawRef@wlu.edu to request access. The documents we provide on request may be redacted to remove sensitive information.
